This year’s National Cartoonist Society Award for Best Comic Strip has been won by Mark Tatulli for “Lio,” which Universal Press Syndicate launched in 2006.

“Just past its third birthday, ‘Lio’ offers a decidedly new and edgy twist to the dialogue-less newspaper comic format,” a Universal Press announcement of the award stated. “Tatulli also employs a unique drawing style influenced by cartooning greats Gahan Wilson, Charles Addams, and 19th-century satirist A.J. Volck.”

Tatulli is also the creator of the comic strip “Heart of the City,” featuring “a fun-loving, tenacious little girl and her adventures in the big city of Philadelphia.”
