The McClatchy Co. reported a rise in revenues for February, thanks to big increases in advertising from its California papers, which climbed 9.4%. For the entire company, advertising revenues increased 5.5% and total revenues were up 4.5%. These numbers include the recent purchase of the Merced (Calif.) Sun-Star, which occurred on Jan. 7.
Excluding the Merced paper, the company reported significant gains in national advertising revenue, which rose 7.8%. Classified revenue inched up 2.6%, pushed by strong gains in real estate (+8.3%); direct marketing (+14%); and online categories (+60.3%). On a combined basis of print and online advertising, employment classifieds increased 11.3%.
Overall, average paid daily circulation is up 1.9%, but Sunday average paid circ fell by 0.7%. Total online page views fell 4%.
