McClatchy Up in July Despite Circ Revenue Drops

The McClatchy Co. reported today that advertising revenue in July increased 2.8% and total revenue grew 2% when compared to the same period last year. Year-to-date, advertising revenue is up 3.4% and total revenue rose 2.6%.

Circulation revenue for July declined 2.9%. Year-to-date, circulation revenue is down 1.5%. Average daily circulation in July fell 2.2% while Sunday dropped 4.1%. Circulation for its community newspapers also slipped 3.8%.

Including online, retail advertising in July was up 0.7%. National advertising was down 6.3%. Classified advertising advanced 5.5%. Within classified, auto was down 11.2%, real estate was up 19%, and help wanted was up 14.7%.

In July, full run ROP advertising lineage at the Star Tribune in Minneapolis was down 6.6%. The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C. also dropped 7.1%. The Sacramento Bee reported gains, up 4.1%.
