Knight Ridder has named John McKeon vice president/marketing for its corporate staff, effective Oct. 17. He replaces Mike Petrak, who earlier this month became publisher of The Idaho Statesman in Boise.

McKeon, 48, currently the executive vice president and general manager of Newsday, announced his decision to leave the paper on Sept. 16.

Hilary Schneider, senior vice president of Knight Ridder, said in a statement, ?John is an extraordinary professional, and we are very fortunate that he has agreed to join us. His record at Times-Mirror and Tribune speaks eloquently of his strengths.?

Prior to Newsday, McKeon served as senior vice president/advertising for the Los Angeles Times from 1998 to 2001. Earlier posts included a period as senior vice president/advertising and chief innovation officer at Newsday from 1994 to 1998, a variety of senior advertising and marketing positions at Newsday, and two years as vice president/marketing at Times Mirror National Marketing.
