Groupon and Living Social may still loom largest in the deals market, but media companies are positioned to cut a much bigger profile in a crowded space where consumer appetites still have not abated.

Buoyed by strong relationships with merchants, well-built local sales forces and proven track records of delivering solid customers to local businesses, experts say that media companies hold a number of inherent advantages over pureplay deals sites. And given a growing trend to upsell SMB deals clients to other advertising services, some media companies are increasing their revenue by taking deals out of a silo and adopting a more holistic approach to using them.
