William Dean Singleton, the vice chairman and CEO of MediaNews Group Inc., has been chosen by The Associated Press Board of Directors to take over as chairman when Burl Osborne, publisher emeritus of The Dallas Morning News, completes his five years as chairman of the group next May. Until then, Singleton will continue to serve as the board’s vice chairman.
Additionally, the AP’s board voted not to increase the general assessment on the basic services of AP newspaper and broadcast members in 2007. This would mark the first year since 1971 that no rate increase on basic services was imposed. Over the past 10 years, rate increases have averaged 2.7% per year. The board did, however, establish an increase of 5% on most rates for non-member customers and on selected special services and premium products for members.
Singletonhas been an elected member of the AP board since 1999. In 2005, he was re-elected to a three-year term. His MediaNews Group is one of the largest privately-owned newspaper companies in the United States.
