MediaNews Group named a president of its digital division, with the Denver-based company tapping former Time Inc. executive Oliver Knowlton to take on the role. The company also appointed Mark Winkler to the newly created position of executive vice president and chief marketing and sales officer.
Additionally, MediaNews Group said Steven Rossi, currently its COO, will now become president and CEO of the company’s California Newspaper Partnership, a position vacated by George Riggs.
Knowlton, 50, was previously general manager of the Sports Illustrated franchise including its Web site. He succeeds Eric Grilly, who left the company to head up Philly.com.
Winkler, 48, was most recently division vice president and general manager of Comcast Spotlight, the advertising sales arm of Comcast.
The company said that Mike Petrak becomes vice president of sales and will report to Winkler.
Knowlton and Winkler along with MediaNews Group CEO William Dean Singleton and President Joseph Lodovic will serve in the newly formed group “office of the chairman,” which will provide strategic direction and operational oversight of the company. As a result, the company is eliminating the position of COO.
