Memorial Press Group of Plymouth, Mass., has reached a preliminary agreement to acquire the Associated and Independent community newspapers, a group serving 12 towns south of Boston.
The sale, which is expected to close this year, will give Memorial Press Group and its parent company, Enterprise NewsMedia LLC, added presence in the southern Massachusetts region. In addition to MPG, Enterprise NewsMedia owns The Patriot Ledger of Quincy, The Enterprise of Brockton, and the SouthofBoston.com Web site.
The Associated and Independent purchase will be MPG’s third acquisition in the past year. The group is best known for its flagship publication, The Old Colony Memorial, based in Plymouth, Mass. Weekly newspaper expansion has been pegged as a key part of the growth strategy for MPG’s parent company, Enterprise NewsMedia.
Associated and Independent is represented in the sale by media brokerage firm W.B. Grimes & Co.
The Associated and Independent papers, based in Rockland, Mass., were consolidated by the late John Anderson. Anderson served as publisher of the group from 1966 until his death in 2002, when publishing duties were passed on to his son, Jesse Anderson.
