Debra Kuykendall has been named president and publisher of the Merced (Calif.) Sun-Star. She most recently served as vice president of sales and marketing, and assumed the duties of interim publisher on Nov. 27.

She replaces Hank Vander Veen, who has left the paper.

“Debbie is a dynamic, experienced executive who knows Merced and the Central Valley inside and out,” Gary Pruitt, McClatchy CEO, said in a statement. “She’s an ideal fit for the newspaper and the community.”

Kuykendall joined McClatchy 36 years ago, starting her career at The Modesto (Calif.) Bee and working up to vice president of operations after a stint as director of operational services and prepress manager. She began her career in classified advertising.

Kuykendall, 56, was raised in the Modesto area and now lives on a ranch in Merced County where she and her husband raise cattle.
