Rick Mercier, commentary editor at the Aniston (Ala.) Star since December, has been appointed editorial page editor. He will oversee the daily editorial pages, and also manage Insight and Bookshelf, both regular features of The Star’s Sunday edition.
He previously served as a news editor and columnist for the Freelance-Star in Fredericksburg, Va., where his writing (which was also carried widely on the Web) sometimes drew criticism from local conservatives.
Mercier said in a statement that the Star “has a tradition of being a progressive voice in Alabama and taking a stand that isn’t necessarily the majority of Alabamians. I want to maintain that tradition,” Mercier said. “I want to challenge our readers and present a wide range of views, including news that they won’t necessarily hear on cable networks or read in other newspapers.”
“Rick is an experienced and qualified journalist who brings a depth of
knowledge of things international, national and local to his work,” said Bob Davis, the Star’s Editor.
