Former Miami Herald and Detroit Free Press publisher David Lawrence Jr. will be honored at Kent State University Nov. 17 as the 2004 recipient of the Robert G. McGruder Award, named for the first African American editor of the Free Press.

Lawrence retired in 1999 as chairman and publisher of the Herald. The award is part of the university’s second annual “Celebration of Diversity.” The awards program and lecture is free and open to the public. It will be held beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the Kent Student Center on campus in Kent, Ohio.

McGruder was a 1963 Kent State graduate who was the first African American to edit the school paper, the Daily Kent Stater. He died in 2002.
