Paper Editions Will Vanish By 2018, Company Says
Bill Gates has predicted the end of the print newspaper on more than one occasion. His company’s latest prognostication comes in a new advertisement for Microsoft Reader, the company’s e-book technology.
In a timeline running across the bottom of the 4-page ad, it is announced that ‘Major newspapers publish their last paper editions and move solely to electronic distribution’ in 2018. The ad says the timeline ‘represents the best estimates of Microsoft researchers and developers familiar with the history of electronic publishing.’
In Microsoft’s vision of the future, newspapers will adopt its new ‘eBook’ technology and become ‘eNewspapers.’ The timeline predicts $1 billion in sales of ‘eBook titles, eMagazines, and eNewspapers’ by 2005.
