Responding to an increasing number of thefts of newspaper vending machines, police in Gulfport, Miss., and along U.S. 49 in that state are asking for public help in stopping the crimes, according to an article in the Sun Herald of Biloxi.

The largest number of the coin-operated newspaper racks which were stolen are owned by the Sun Herald, according to Police Chief Alan Weatherford, says the article. 125 Sun Herald racks have gone missing throughout the county in the past four months, with 66 taken in Gulfport alone.

The piece quotes Weatherford as saying the thefts were “a quality-of-life issue. If people get away with stealing newspaper racks, what else will they do?”
