News-Press & Gazette Co., publisher of the St. Joseph (Mo.) News-Press, is buying the newspaper division of Townsend Communications Inc. of Kansas City, Mo., the companies announced Thursday.
Four Missouri papers with a combined circulation of 87,600 are involved in the sale: the twice-weekly Liberty Tribune and Dispatch-Tribune of Clay/Platte counties; and the weekly Raytown Tribune and The Wednesday, which circulate in South Kansas City.
Dirks, Van Essen & Murray, a newspaper merger-and-acquisition firm in Santa Fe, N.M., represented Townsend Communications in the transaction.The sale is expected to close in late August. Terms were not disclosed.
News-Press & Gazette Co., which is principally owned by the Bradley family, also publishes the Atchison (Kan.) Daily Globe and the Hiawatha (Kan.) World, as well as weeklies in Kearney and Smithville, Mo. It operates cable television systems in the St. Joseph area and in several communities in Arizona and California. It owns television and radio stations in Texas, California and Oregon.
