The Monster Employment Index dip in December to 167 from 175 in November signals a possible downturn in recruitment advertising.

Goldman Sachs analyst Peter Appert wrote in a note that the slowdown is cause for concern for the newspaper industry. ?Weakening help-wanted advertising will be a source of further downside pressure on earnings for the newspaper publishers,? he wrote.

Furthermore, the rate of growth has declined considerably since the index was introduced two years ago and is now at its lowest point, Goldman Sachs points out. Year-over-year growth fell to 15% in December compared with 22.9% in September.
