A Batavia woman was killed while delivering newspapers yesterday when her car –which was on the wrong side of the road — was struck by a Genesee County Sheriff’s deputy.
Fifty-9-year-old Deborah Vasi, of Batavia, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The accident occurred around 2:36 a.m. Sunday in the Town of Darien.
Police say Vasi was crossing over into the oncoming lane to put a newspaper into a mail box. She was delivering copies of The Buffalo News.
A sheriff’s deputy, Jason Saile, was traveling north with his emergency lights on, responding to an emergency 911 hang-up call in the Town of Pembroke.
Police say when he broke over the crest of a hill in the road and approached Colby Road, the officer hit Vasi’s car almost head on.
The officer attempted to swerve to avoid hitting Ms. Vasi’s car, but the vehicle was too far over into his lane.
Saile was treated for minor cuts and bruises.
The accident is being investigated by the New York State Police, which is standard practice.
