The New York Times might not run comics, but it put a comic collection on the cover of its Sunday book-review section this past weekend.
Receiving the unusually prominent display was “The Long Road Home: One Step at a Time,” which features “Doonesbury” strips about B.D. losing a leg in Iraq and trying to deal with the injury.
The book (E&P Online, June 1) received a positive evaluation from reviewer Kurt Andersen, who wrote: “Garry Trudeau, who by all rights should be phoning it in by now, still takes his responsibilities to the strip and his audience seriously, and in service to them still takes large and interesting risks. Which is one reason I am much more enthusiastic about the Democrats’ favorite comic strip than I tend to be about the Democrats.”
Royalties from the Andrews McMeel Publishing book — which includes an introduction by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) — will go the Fisher House Foundation. The foundation provides a place for the families of wounded soldiers to stay near military and veterans’ hospitals.
“Doonesbury” appears in about 1,400 newspapers via Universal Press Syndicate.
