Today is National Columnists Day.
April 18 was chosen for NCD because that was the date in 1945 that legendary syndicated columnist Ernie Pyle was killed while covering World War II.
The idea for an annual NCD, which began in 1995, came from former National Society of Newspaper Columnists President Bill Tammeus of The Kansas City (Mo.) Star and Knight Ridder/Tribune News Service. Columnist Dave Lieber of the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram suggested the April 18 date.
