Linking Company To Be Used For E-Commerce
(The Hollywood Reporter) NBC Internet has purchased Flyswat Inc., a privately held company
whose technology creates Internet hyperlinks from text where no link had existed before.
The free Flyswat software allows users reading text that contained the name Miles Davis, for
example, to click on the name and link to a Web page biography of the musician or be taken to
a site where his CDs can be purchased, even if no hyperlink previously existed.
NBCi traded an undisclosed amount of stock for Flyswat, although the deal is reportedly worth
$70 million to $100 million. NBCi said it will use Flyswat to bolster NBCi Direct, its direct
e-commerce division, as well as strengthen the company’s broadband and business-to-business
strategies and its core search and navigation services. The acquisition is expected to be
completed by the end of May.
