ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Pioneer Press and TwinCities.com continue to dominate the Twin Cities’ East Metro market, reaching 2.7 million users each month with their full range of print and digital media products, according to the latest industry measurements.
Reports show page views for the Pioneer Press’ mobile products up 167 percent year over year and a growing social media presence in the Twin Cities market, along with circulation gains that continue the newspaper’s industry-leading pattern of multi-year circulation growth.
Pioneer Press totals from the Audit Bureau of Circulations for the six-month period ending Sept. 30 show Sunday circulation of 252,796, up 5,608 copies, and circulation Wednesday-Friday — the three key weekdays for newspaper advertising — of 199,323, up 1,552 copies, compared with the same period last year. The figures measure the Pioneer Press’ total average circulation, including individually paid print and digital edition copies.
“The Pioneer Press’ print home-delivery and single-copy circulation has significantly outperformed the industry, leading to our steady market share gains over the last five years, particularly on Sunday,” says Pioneer Press Publisher Guy Gilmore. “Those who follow the numbers know that the trends have been outstanding year in year out. The Pioneer Press has now reported Sunday circulation growth for six years (12 consecutive reporting periods) and daily growth for five years (10 consecutive periods), with the greatest increases coming in the key East Metro counties of Ramsey, Dakota, Washington and Chisago in Minnesota and Polk, Pierce and St. Croix in Wisconsin.
On Sundays, individually paid print, home-delivered and newsstand circulation in the seven counties was above the prior year by 1,444 copies for the six months ending in September.
TwinCities.com averaged nearly 11 million page views per month during the six-month period from April through September. In addition, over the past two years, the Pioneer Press has developed free mobile news apps for iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows and BlackBerry devices. The Pioneer Press’ iPhone, Android and Windows apps had 550,000 page views in September of 2011.
The Pioneer Press, which debuted a new, free iPad app this fall, also has a growing presence on social media. From April through September, Facebook fans increased 44 percent. During the same six-month period, combined Twitter followers increased 33 percent over the previous six-month average.
