NEW LEADERS OPPOSE CROSS-OWNERSHIP RULE

By: Todd Shields

Tauzin, McCain To Head Relevant Committees

Congressional leaders doled out committee assignments this month,
and Rep. W.J. “Billy” Tauzin, R-La., gained the chairmanship of
the former Commerce Committee. The panel, now known as Energy and
Commerce, oversees the Federal Communications Commission (FCC),
making it a key stop for newspapers.

They welcome congressional pressure to kill an FCC rule that bars
common ownership of newspapers and broadcast stations in the same
city. Tauzin opposes the rule, as did his predecessor, who has
retired.

On the other side of the Capitol, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.,
another opponent of the cross-ownership ban, will return to his
chairmanship of the Commerce Committee after the inauguration of
President-elect Bush.
