Dario Designs won four projects in each of the last six months, according to the newspaper-specialist architectural firm, based in Marlboro, Mass.
“Most are for small to medium-sized newspapers in the west,” Dario Designs Marketing Director Cindy DiMatteo said in a statement. The firm added four projects in Colorado alone. Others include “several large projects for some metropolitan newspapers, and two more projects overseas, soon to be four,” DiMatteo added.
Among new employees supporting the additional business at the company’s new headquarters is George Morin, a licensed architect with more than 25 years of experience, both locally and abroad. As director of architecture, Morin is in charge of the A&E division, which is responsible for construction documents.
Scott Clevinger, most recently strategic projects manager for Tribune Co.’s Daily Press, Newport News, Va., joined Dario Designs’ consulting division, where he serves as project manager for masterplans, strategic plans, front-to-back process analyses, and operational studies. Clevinger earlier was on Tribune’s corporate technology staff and served on the Newspaper Association of America’s Nexpo Planning Committee and the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association production committee.
Two others now with Dario Designs – both with experience in Latin America – are Derick Veliz, a design architect, and Ronaldo Gilberti, head of the international division. Veliz, who has practiced in the United States and Central America for 14 years, is a lead designer at Dario Designs, working in the United States and abroad.
A licensed architect in Brazil, Gilberti led The Austin Co.’s Brazil office from 1975 to 1988 and worked for five years in Houston, and Renton Wash. (His brother Celso’s firm was responsible for designing the plants of The Plain Dealer, Cleveland, Dayton (Ohio) Daily News, and The Post-Standard, Syracuse, NY.
Other recent hires are Noah Goldman, a recent graduate architect who will work in the design department, and Jami Redman, who will assist with project administrative services and marketing.
Recent projects include two for Cox Newspapers -a major A&E contract for a 63,000-square-foot production addition and 24,000-square-foot renovation at The Austin (Texas) American Statesman and an A&E contract for a new office and production facility for The Daily Sentinel, Grand Junction, Colo. In Florida, The Naples Daily News commissioned Dario Designs to provide full A&E services for a new 170,000-square-foot facility, and Sun Publications signed for the design of a new facility in Lakeland.
