A new regional publisher was named Wednesday for the Independent Record in Helena and the Montana Standard in Butte.
Randy Rickman, 47, has been publisher of The Sentinel in Hanford, Calif, since 2003. He was born in Butte and lived in Helena until his middle school years.
“When the opportunity came up, I immediately jumped at it,” said Rickman, who brings 30 years of newspaper experience to the job. “We feel so fortunate to get to Montana. The lifestyle it provides is unmatched, and getting the opportunity to work with both Butte and Helena makes it that much better.”
Rickman began his career with Lee Enterprises — the newspapers’ parent company — in 1979 as an apprentice press operator at Trico Publishing in Wilton, Iowa. He joined the Los Angeles Times in 1984, working with automotive and real estate advertisers. In 1989, he rejoined Lee as a retail team leader at The Journal Times in Racine, Wis.
He later became retail advertising manager at the Rapid City (S.D.) Journal; direct marketing manager for Lee’s former television stations in New Mexico; and director of Lee’s former direct marketing operation in Davenport, Iowa.
Before moving to Hanford, he was general sales manager and then general manager of Lee’s former Nickel publications in Seattle and Portland.
At the IR, Rickman will replace advertising manager Jim Rickman, who is of no relation, and circulation manager Anita Fasbender, who have been interim co-publishers since November. At the Standard, he will replace former publisher Janet Taylor.
Randy Rickman will be based in Helena.
