John L. Pitts has been named sports editor of the Daily Journal in Tupelo, Miss.
Pitts, 49, previously served as the Journal’s assistant sports editor. He left the paper in 2005 and spent a year as a sportswriter for the TimesDaily in Florence, Ala., before being named to his new position.
In addition to heading up his department, Phelps will also be a sportswriter and featured columnist.
Pitts’ newspaper career includes a stint at USA Today, for which he covered the 1988 Olympics in South Korea and served as Olympic Sports Editor. He has also worked at three other Olympics, including the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City.
He succeeds Gene Phelps, who has been sports editor since 1986 and will become a senior writer.
