New Syndicate Is Targeting Younger Readers

Two young men have launched a syndicate offering content aimed at younger readers.

Sol Media Syndicate was founded by editor/writer Tom Boyd, 30; and former Sierra Video Systems Vice President and Webmaster Kent Van Vleet, who’s in his 20s.

“There are two ways to get young readers,” said Boyd. “One is to print entertaining material, the other is to embrace technology. We’re doing both.”

Van Vleet added: “Young readers want music samples, podcasts, SSF feeds, dowloadable material, and streaming video. Our goal is to make it easy for newspapers of any size to offer dynamic material on their Web sites.”

Boyd said Sol Media selected a small number of artists and writers to syndicate from among hundreds of applicants. The first four features include “GenerationWHY” by Terri Schlichenmeyer, who offers facts and figures; “The Shuffle” by Jed Gottlieb, who provides three music reviews a week; “Movie Detective” by Nickey Hernandez, who does film reviews in both PG-13 and R-rated versions; and editorial cartoons by Don Sidle.

Other features, including the weekly “Around the World” travel series, are slated to be introduced next year.
