‘New Yorker’ Cover Drawing Inspires Cartoon Takeoffs

By: E&P Staff

Several editorial cartoonists have drawn takeoffs on the controversial New Yorker cover picturing a Muslim Barack Obama and a gun-toting Michelle Obama.

One of the highlights is a drawing by “Tab” (The Calgary Sun/Cagle Cartoons), who shows Iraq invader George W. Bush fist-bumping the sickle-toting figure of death. In the room is a small waterboarding device, and in the fireplace is a burning U.S. Constitution.

Also, R.J. Matson (St. Louis Post-Dispatch/Cagle Cartoons) shows The New Yorker cover under the label “Sophisticated Satire” — and the same drawing labeled “Malicious Slander” if it had appeared on the cover of the conservative National Review.

The cartoons can be seen on Daryl Cagle’s blog here.
