News Ltd., Kodak retail news pics
Photos from 130 News Ltd. newspapers in Australia will be sold to the public through a networked nationwide chain of Kodak Image Magic systems at photographic retailers. The result of an agreement between Eastman Kodak Co. and the newspaper group controlled by Rupert Murdoch, the NewsPhoto service will include digital images from The Australian national daily in Sydney, dailies in several cities, and regional and community newspapers.
“As an editor, it has always disappointed me that these great photos have disappeared into our archives,” said Peter Blunden, Melbourne Herald Sun editor, at the May 20 launch of the service during a trade show in his paper’s home city. “We have 30 million photos archived, and we are adding a million a year.”
Buyers can peruse images on screen before ordering a print from a photographic-quality digital printer. Beginning this summer, NewsPhoto will roll out to 800 stores across the country. News Ltd. deputy chief executive officer Peter Macourt called it “an example of the way new technology allows us to build new revenue streams on the back of our existing business.”
