The Newspaper Guild has lost some 2,000 members in the past year as layoffs and cutbacks soar, while also losing about $200,000, according to recently-elected president Bernie Lunzer.
Lunzer told Forbes.com the deficit may grow in 2009 as the union seeks to recruit more members and help stem the tide of newspaper cutbacks. Even the Guild?s official newspaper, The Guild Reporter, is having to cut back from monthly to bi-monthly publication.
“Right now the biggest thing you’re fighting is the overall sense of impending doom,” said Lunzer, who took over for 12-year incumbent Linda Foley earlier this year.
But, he remained positive, telling Forbes: ?I actually think the pendulum is swinging back in our direction in terms of people understanding they do need a voice.?
