If “Dear Abby” were giving advice to The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J., she might say “better late than never.”

This Saturday, the newspaper put an editor’s note on top of the “Dear Abby” column. It read: “You will notice that the ‘Dear Abby’ photo has been changed. The column is now written by Jeanne Phillips, whose photo appears here. The column was founded by her mother, Pauline Phillips.”

But newspapers learned way back in August 2002 that Pauline had Alzheimer’s disease and that Jeanne (who had already been working on “Dear Abby” for years) was officially taking over the column on a solo basis. Most newspaper clients switched to Jeanne’s photo at that time.

“Dear Abby,” which began in 1956, is distributed by Universal Press Syndicate.
