Casa Grande Valley Newspapers Inc. is building a $1.3 million newsprint warehouse in a new industrial park where the Union Pacific Railroad will deliver rolls.
Until several years ago, newsprint from the Pacific Northwest was delivered to Casa Grande, but changes in railroad procedures made that difficult without a centralized drop point, according to a report in The Casa Grande (Ariz.) Dispatch. So the company has been receiving the paper in Glendale, and paying for storage and trucking to Casa Grande.
At the new site, newsprint rolls will be delivered by the railroad to a staging area, from which an engine operating within the park will tow them to the 7,500-square-foot warehouse, expected to be ready in about six months.
In addition to the daily Dispatch, the company publishes weeklies for nearby towns, Pinal Real Estate Buyers’ Guide, Pinal Ways Magazine, Wampum Saver of the Casa Grande Valley and Pinal County Shopper’s Star Watch. It also prints, at its downtown Casa Grande plant, the White Mountain Independent for an affiliated company, as well as commercial work.
