Oregon Daily Negotiates With Eugene Newspaper Guild
The National Labor Relations Board has filed an unfair-labor practices complaint against
The Register-Guard in Eugene, Ore.
Guard Publishing Co., publisher of the 74,842-circulation paper, has been asked to
respond to the charges before an administrative law judge. The NLRB action relates to
allegations filed against the paper by the Eugene Newspaper Guild, Local 194, which
represents about 155 company employees.
The NLRB investigated the union allegations and found that there was ‘reasonable cause’ to
believe the company broke federal law, said Paul Eggert, regional director of the NLRB
The company has been bargaining with the union over a contract since February 1999, said
Cynthia Walden, the newspaper’s human resources director. ‘These allegations are one of a
number of tactics the guild has taken during these negotiations. We feel confident an
administrative law judge will find The Register-Guard did not violate any laws,’ she told
