The North County Times laid off 25 reporters and editors Tuesday, citing an ongoing slump in advertising revenue.
The newsroom cuts shrink the editorial team by about 20 percent, the newspaper reported. The additional cuts were across the paper, including in the advertising and circulation departments.
The layoffs were needed to keep the northern San Diego County paper viable, publisher Peter York said.
“We’re not losing money, but we’re not doing as well as we ought to,” York said.
Lee Enterprises, a Davenport, Iowa, company that owns the newspaper, last week said preliminary earnings dropped 73 percent in the fiscal fourth quarter.
