Crystal Lake, Ill.-based Northwest Herald on Monday launched the first Chicago-area video-on-demand Webcast, or “vodcast,” of local news in partnership with CBS 2 Chicago, the networked owned-and-operated television channel.

CBS 2 @ your desk Northwest Herald edition, on www.nwherald.com, is the first paper in Dixon, Ill.-based Shaw Newspapers’ NorthWest News Group subsidiary to launch the vodcast.

Local news of McHenry County in far northwestern suburban Chicago is provided by the newspaper, and the vodcast is produced by CBS 2, using regular anchors such as Randy Salerno.

“It’s the next step for us as we forge ahead as a 24/7 information company,” NorthWest News Group Editor Chris Krug said. “And having a local guy like Randy Salerno, who grew up in Crystal Lake, as a key part of the project, that makes it even better.”

In a statement, CBS 2 Vice President and News Director Carol Fowler called the launch “really a groundbreaking moment in local media.”

The two news organizations have had a relationship for more than a year now. CBS 2 weatherman Steve Baskerville and its sports anchor Mark Malone write columns for the paper, and the television station has a bureau operating out of the NorthWest News Group’s offices. This February, the station installed a weather camera on the roof of the newspaper’s building.
