(AP) The New York Times announced Wednesday that Sam Tanenhaus, a contributing editor at Vanity Fair and author of a well-regarded biography of Whittaker Chambers, has been named editor of its influential Sunday book review section.

Tanenhaus, 48, succeeds Charles McGrath, who will be a writer at large for the newspaper. Tanenhaus previously worked for the Times as assistant editor of the Op-Ed pages from 1997 to 1999.

His books include “Whittaker Chambers,” a 1997 biography of the famed Cold War-era Congressional witness and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award.
