To mark Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday — which will be celebrated around the world on July 18 — the New York Times Syndicate is offering a series of articles and photos.

The content provides a retrospective of the career of South Africa’s first black president.

Included is a 1985 Alan Cowell article headlined “Leading Foe of Apartheid Spurns a Conditional Offer of Freedom,” a 1990 John F. Burns story headlined “South Africa’s New Era: After Three Decades, Mandela Measures Up to Legend,” a 1994 Bill Keller piece headlined “Mandela Is Named President, Closing the Era of Apartheid,” a 1997 Anthony Lewis piece headlined “Mandela the Pol,” and other material.
