NYTimes.com Changes Plan to Offer Free Archives for College Students

By: E&P Staff

The New York Times is reconsidering a plan announced last month that would make the paper’s full archives available online to all college students with an email address ending in “.edu,” according to an article in the Chronicle of Higher Education.

The article says that the paper received complaints from school librarians over the plan, as many schools currently spend thousands of dollars so that students can access Times archives (which go back to the 1800’s) via Lexis-Nexis and ProQuest.

As a compromise, the newspaper is reportedly planning making the archives available only to students at those colleges that already subscribe to the Times database.
