The much-anticipated joint appearance of presumed presidential nominees Barack Obama and John McCain at next week’s Unity ’08 convention of minority journalists won’t happen, Richard Prince reported in his online column Friday.
Unity had moved its planned “presidential candidates forum” to prime time next Thursday from an afternoon slot so that CNN could air the first joint meeting of Democrat Obama and Republican McCain.
But Prince, in his “Journal-isms” column on the Maynard Institute Web site, reported that Obama will be in Europe next Thursday, and McCain will be attending a long-scheduled “Town Hall on Cancer” sponsored by Lance Armstrong’s foundation.
Prince quoted Unity’s Executive Director Onica Makwakwa as saying the convention was still “working on both campaigns” and expects to announce in a few days “what adjustments, if any, we will make.”
This year’s Unity event, scheduled for July 23 through 27 in Chicago is the fifth joint convention of the National Association of Black Journalists, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, the Asian American Journalists Association, and the Native American Journalists Association.
