(AP) John Conrad, sports editor at The Register-Guard in Eugene, Ore., died Tuesday of complications from a stroke. He was 57.

Conrad worked in the sports department of the Register-Guard for 33 years, starting as a reporter. He was named Oregon sportswriter of the year in 1982.

He was promoted to sports editor in 1984, while continuing to be the primary writer covering the Oregon men’s basketball team.

“This is a terribly sad day for all of us at the newspaper,” said Editor and Publisher Tony Baker. “John was one of those really good people, a consummate professional. He helped make our sports pages consistently top-notch, and he certainly made those around him better.”

Conrad played baseball at Oregon and graduated in 1967. He started working for the Register-Guard two years later.

Conrad suffered a stroke at his Springfield home on Sunday. At his request, there will be no funeral or memorial service.
