“Out of the Gene Pool” creator Matt Janz made a reference today to “Peanuts” reruns and the way some newspapers are not willing to embrace more realistic/topical comics.

In the strip (http://www.comics.com/wash/genepool/index.html), Janz shows a shopper bringing a vacuum cleaner back to a store. “I told my husband I wanted a vacuum with all the fancy gadgets and accessories. This vacuum just SUCKS,” she says. “This is why newspapers still run ‘Peanuts,'” responds Janz’s Madame Red character, who’s staffing the returns counter.

“Lately it seems that some of the newer cartoonists are trying to push the envelope even more than usual, and I do think some newspaper editors take solace in knowing a strip like ‘Peanuts’ will never try to slip in the word ‘sucks,'” said Janz, when contacted today by E&P.

“Out of the Gene Pool” is syndicated by the Washington Post Writers Group, and the late Charles M. Schulz’s “Peanuts” reruns are distributed by United Media.
