As first reported in the April issue of E&P, Janet Owen has joined The Register-Guard as production director, succeeding, Jerry LaCamp, who retired late last year after nearly 39 years with the Eugene, Ore., daily.
With more than 25 years of newspaper production experience, Owen will oversee the printing, product-distribution and ad-building functions.
Calling Owen a “hands-on leader,” Register-Guard Chief Operating Officer David Pero cited her “wealth of experience” in all production areas.
Owen said a smaller, privately owned newspaper would put her closer to the operations and personnel. In making the move, she also cited the quality of life in Lane County, Ore.
Owen moved to Eugene from the StarTribune in Minneapolis, where she served as senior vice president of operations, with responsibility for 920 employees. The StarTribune twice earned international membership in the International Newspaper Color Quality Club during her tenure.
Earlier, as The Fresno (Calif.) Bee’s operations director, she helped the paper improve its reproduction and color quality as well as shorten its advertising deadlines. Before moving to Fresno, the Cal Poly graduate was prepress and IT director at the Los Angeles Times.
