Local Businessman Wants Fair Journalism
Dr. Robert B. Pamplin, Jr. has purchased 11 weekly newspapers in
the Portland, Ore., area – a buyout that he describes as an effort
to maintain ‘fair journalism’ in the region. Pamplin said he and
his wife will launch an additional publication early next year.
The 11 weeklies are: Portland’s OurTown, Beaverton Valley Times,
Clackamas County News, Forest Grove News-Times, Lake Oswego Review,
Sellwood Bee, Sherwood Gazette, Southwest Community Connections,
Tigard Times, Tualatin Times, and West Linn Tidings.
Nine of these weeklies were under Community Newspapers, whose owner
Steve Clark will remain with the company as publisher and president.
The two extra weeklies will be added to Clark’s responsibilities.
Plans for a twelfth weekly are underway and Pamplin has already
named a radio host from his local station, 860 AM, as president of
the newspaper group.
Pamplin says the papers have a combined circulation of 500,000, and
will employ 270 people.
Pamplin is president and CEO of privately held R. B. Pamplin Corp.
