Tony Ridder’s son Par was named the new publisher of the St. Paul Pioneer Press today. Par Ridder currently serves as publisher of The Tribune in San Luis Obispo, Calif., and will succeed Harold Higgins in St. Paul.

“Par Ridder’s performance in San Luis Obispo has been nothing short of phenomenal,” Knight Ridder Newspaper Division President Steve Rossi said in a statement. “The newspaper has grown circulation in each of the past three years and it has won numerous awards for its outstanding journalism.”

Par Ridder, 35, became publisher of The Tribune in 2001, previously serving as vice president and advertising director. He also worked for the Contra Costa Times, Akron Beacon Journal and The Washington Post.

In a statement, Knight Ridder Chairman and CEO Tony Ridder praised Higgins, who the company said is retiring. Ridder noted that Higgins, 53, has served as publisher of four Knight Ridder papers.
