Parade Publications Inc., a division of Advance Publications, is closing its
newspaper-inserted react magazine and accompanying Web site that, until now, have
targeted teenage boys and girls ages 12-17.

Scheduled to close by June 5, react has been popular among Newspapers in Education
programs that distributed the magazine during the academic year. react reports that
225 newspapers carried the teen publication and its total circulation was more than 3
million.

‘While we were able to reach one of the largest teen audiences, unfortunately we were
unable to achieve similar success with the advertising community,’ says Walter Anderson,
chairman, publisher, and CEO of Parade Publications. ‘Although many of the nation’s finest
newspapers responded enthusiastically to react, our investment of time and capital
resources did not meet our financial goals.’

react.com, the online version of the publication, has integrated the print publication with
interactive features for its teen audience. Yucky.com, an offshoot of react.com that targets
a younger age group, will continue to operate its Web site. Yucky.com does not have a sister
publication in print and, according to Christie Emden, spokesperson for Parade, the newspaper
insert company currently does not have plans to develop one.
