I love stories that take me to far-flung places, and this piece about a man walking a pilgrimage to the holy city of Karbala, through the “Triangle of Death” in Iraq is a great pick.
The Triangle of Death is where suicide bombers, presumably Sunni extremists, have attacked fellow pilgrims before. The trek covers 50 miles from Baghdad to Karbala, passing through 14 cities, best known as scenes of death and destruction.
In addition to the print stories there is a photo gallery and a short video that shows how the local, poor townpeople open their homes and offer food and kindness to pilgrims as they pass through.
