“Pearls Before Swine” has become the first comic chosen by readers rather than editors in the history of The Courier-Journal of Louisville.

Stephan Pastis’ United Media strip started yesterday in the Kentucky paper, which “auditioned” four comics during the past eight weeks (in print and online) while conducting a running Web vote.

More than 26,000 people voted in all, with “Pearls” chosen over “Zits” by a margin of 47.5% to 45.8%.
