PetConnection.com, which is associated with the “Pet Connection” column distributed by Universal Press Syndicate, announced that its database contains reports that tainted food sickened or killed more than 2,400 pets.

Only 16 deaths have been confirmed by the federal Food and Drug Administration, noted Universal, which added that PetConnection.com “gave pet owners a place to report the loss of their animal companions at a time when the manufacturer and FDA offered nothing but busy lines.”

Other sources, such as the Veterinary Information Network, have said the PetConnection.com figures are more believable than the FDA’s.

The lead creators of the “Pet Connection” column are Gina Spadafori and Dr. Marty Becker.
