Cartoonist Patrick McDonnell’s late dog Earl is the subject of Joan Lowell Smith’s “Concerning Animals” column in today’s Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J.

Earl, a Jack Russell terrier who died last November at the age of 19, was the model for Earl the dog in “Mutts.” The New Jersey-based McDonnell does that comic for more than 700 newspapers via King Features Syndicate.

In the column, McDonnell discusses Earl’s life and death, whether he and his wife Karen might get another dog, and other topics.
