Phil Frank, who ended his local “Farley” comic in the San Francisco Chronicle this past Friday, is also no long working on “The Elderberries” comic distributed by Universal Press Syndicate.

“Corey Pandolph will do [‘The Elderberries’] solo, which he’s been doing now for some time due to Phil’s illness,” said Kathie Kerr, Universal’s assistant vice president, communications, when contacted today by E&P.

The exact nature of Frank’s illness has not been publicly disclosed.

Frank, 64, started “Farley” as a syndicated comic in 1975 before turning it into a local Chronicle strip 10 years later.

“The Elderberries,” syndicated by Universal since late 2004, is about a quintet of senior citizens living together in a retirement community.
