Knight Ridder Site Gains Another News Provider
Knight Ridder’s Philly.com has added an unlikely partner.
Philadelphia City Paper, the city’s alternative newsweekly, will
provide entertainment headlines and opening paragraphs to Philly.com
with links back to CityPaper.net.
A regional portal, Philly.com already carries news from Knight Ridder’s
two dailies (The Philadelphia Inquirer and The Philadelphia Daily News)
and Channel 6’s Action News. Channel 6 is owned by Disney.
‘We’d been talking for the last month or so,’ said Fred Mann, regional
vice president of KnightRidder.com. ‘We saw an opportunity to help each
other out, so we finalized the deal last week.’
As part of the deal, all three papers will run print advertising to
promote each other. The sites will also exchange logos on their
respective home pages.
City Paper’s own news editor raised concerns about the potential
conflicts of an alternative paper partnering with major daily newspapers.
In City Paper’s report on the announcement yesterday, Howard Altman
said, ‘I’m not crazy about the idea, but it’s not going to affect our
coverage in any way. I don’t give a flying f*** who we have a
