Akron (Ohio) Beacon Journal comics readers have voted “Pickles” and “The Argyle Sweater” into the newspaper starting today.
“Pickles” (Brian Crane/Washington Post Writers Group) was the runaway favorite among the approximately 1,300 who voted, with the recently launched “Argyle Sweater” (Scott Hilburn/Universal Press Syndicate) coming in second.
Crane’s strip features a senior couple, while Hilburn’s comic is an offbeat panel.
Also, the “Daddy’s Home” comic by Gary Markstein and Anthony Rubino Jr. of Creators Syndicate is taking the place of “Doonesbury” in the Beacon Journal’s daily pages while Garry Trudeau is on leave. And starting April 20, “Daddy’s Home” will run in the Ohio paper’s Sunday comics section beyond the “Doonesbury” sabbatical.
“Zits” by Jerry Scott and Jim Borgman of King Features Syndicate won a recent Beacon Journal poll of comics that were already running in the paper.
